A sump pump is a device that moves flood water from your basement to outside of your home or commercial building by pushing it through a discharge pipe to another location such as a storm drain, dry well, or septic system.

These are the three main types of sump pumps:

• Submersible or well pumps- These are the most common types of sump pump. They consist of a sump pit or basin, motor, and pump. Submersible pumps have a tendency to operate more quietly, clog less often, and occupy less space in your basement than other types of sump pumps.
• Pedestal pumps- This type of pump works similarly to a submersible pump, but the motor and pump are separate. The pump sits in the pit, submerged, and the motor sits on a pedestal above the pit. Pedestal pumps are easier to maintain and tend to last longer.
• Battery backup pumps- For added security during a storm, a battery backup pump with a float switch can save you from flooding if the power goes out. As the water level rises in the pump, it flips the float switch, signaling the battery to turn on. There are also water-powered backup pumps, but they are not recommended as they require water usage, which can increase your water bill.
